The Founder's Story

Hello, everyone. My name is Youyang Wan. I was born and raised in HuangShan, Anhui. I participated in Summer Work Travel in my sophomore year in 2017. I was working as a counter in an American restaurant in Maine. My job included making coffee, simple meals, cash orders, etc.

It was a fluke to participate in the program: I was a sophomore at that time. Many of my classmates and relatives went to the United States to study abroad. I was very envious. In addition, I was an English major. And I chose English because I loved watching Hollywood movies and dramas since I was a child, so I liked English and Western culture; So I was full of curiosity about the United States and was very eager to go to the United States to see what it is like there.

But at that time, besides going to university and traveling, I didn't know any other ways to go to the U.S. Studying abroad is not impossible, but it would become a heavy financial burden for an ordinary family like mine. And to be honest, I was confused about my direction. My father saw that everyone around me went to the U.S. for university, and didn't want me to be inferior to anyone else. He told me that he would sell our house for me to study in the U.S... But at that time, we only owned one house... I didn't want my parents to assure such a heavy financial burden, so I gave up the idea of studying in the U.S.

Later, I thought of traveling to the United States during summer vacation, which cost much less than studying. So I told my mother who knew my 'America complex' and was willing to provide financial assistance. I was very excited. However, I considered traveling not cost-effective after I was excited. First of all, when I travel to the United States, I take RMB with me which means all prices will increase seven times. It will cost tens of thousands of RMB to travel in a week. On the whole, it is less than studying abroad, but the cost-effectiveness is very low; Secondly, tourism is just a cursory tour. As a spectator, I see only superficial things. What I want is to really experience the American culture.

Then I wondered why I didn't go directly to the United States to work for a period of time so that I could earn US dollars without worrying about spending in the U.S., and I could really integrate into American society. I always believed that we learned much more from work than from school. After I thought of this perfect idea, I searched the Internet for "working in America", and found that there was really this program! So I quickly signed up without a second thought and went to the United States alone to participate in that summer vacation.

That summer vacation was the most unforgettable one in my life. I worked as a counter in an American restaurant in Maine. My job was to make coffee, salads and collect money. My salary was 10 dollars an hour, excluding tips. Experienced American coworkers taught me to small talk with customers to earn an extra tip of 5 bucks per customer. This tip had a major contribution to my tips soar that summer. Feel so informative and grateful!

In the restaurant, the working hours of a week during the summer peak are about 50 hours. American law stipulates that the working hours of a week exceed 40 hours, and the salary beyond which is 1.5 times. The restaurant assigned me shifts in the afternoon and evening. The morning was free, so in the motivation of earning US dollars to travel, I found a second job: a housekeeper at a nearby motel with 14 dollars an hour plus tips. I worked with a group of local American elder ladies and had a great time together.

In a word, I spent a busy and substantial summer vacation with my American coworkers. It was hard but worth it. In the U.S., I was self-sufficient. After work, I spent 15 days traveling Boston, New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles with the money I earned.

When I returned home, all of my classmates and family were amazed at my experience. They kept asking me what the program was, why I could work in the U.S., how much money I made, what the U.S. was like... and so on. My family praised me more for bravery and determination. After graduation, this program experience made me stand out in job hunting.

A large number of my friends and friends introduced by friends came to me for consultation, which made me realize that there are thousands of 'me' out there: have no financial conditions to travel or study in the U.S., but also wish to visit the U.S. and experience life there. This program is an excellent opportunity: to work in the United States and get immersed in American society: earn dollars and be self-sufficient; in an English environment, etc.

They also deserve this opportunity!

There is a large room for the promotion of the Exchange Visitor Program in China. I am committed to recommending these opportunities to Chinese youths in need!
