Summer Work and Travel (SWT)

The Summer Work and Travel (SWT) program is a cultural exchange initiative sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. It provides full-time university students (including those from vocational colleges, undergraduate, and graduate programs) aged 18 and over with the opportunity to participate in short-term, paid internships at U.S. businesses for approximately 14 weeks while on a J-1 visa. The program is designed to facilitate cultural immersion and allow participants to experience American life and culture firsthand.

For Chinese students, the legitimate participation period for this program is between June 1st and September 15th. Upon successful completion of the program, participants are granted an additional one month to travel within the United State.

Program Duration:The program takes place during the summer, with the official period spanning from June 1st at the earliest to September 15th at the latest. The total maximum duration is approximately three and a half months, which includes the time allocated for travel within the United States following the completion of the work placement.
